Australians digital identities are set to have greater control to protect their digital identity following the recent passing of the landmark Digital ID Bill.
The recent passing of the much-debated Digital ID Bill through the Senate, is a promise to Australians who are worried and weary of filling out a plethora of forms and paperwork that shares their personal information every time they try to access new private and public services.
It is said the Bill will enable a significantly more simple and secure process to apply for everything from banking or streaming services, to rentals to a new job.
Regulated corporate ID providers reduce sharing IDs with more businesses
Broadening the scope of the familiar MyGovID, which gives Australians access to 130 government services, the new legislation invites major private companies to be accredited against nationally consistent standards as a digital ID service provider to other businesses. These businesses could then use these ID providers to verify their customers without needing to collect and store sensitive information and leave themselves vulnerable to misuse or cyber crime.
Australians given more choice and control over their personal information
It will reduce the number of businesses people share their important documents with, such as passports, birth certificates and driver’s licences, reducing the information held by businesses and the seriousness of any data breaches.
Consumers will have a choice of ID providers that includes both commercial and government entities, and be better protected by privacy safeguards and governance structures enshrined in the the Australian Government Digital ID System (AGDIS)
Economy-wide repercussions
John Shepherd, Head of the Digital ID Taskforce at the Department of Finance, at the helm of championing this legislation highlights the real-world applicability and demand for streamlined and secure identity verification.
“This is a strategic expansion intended to broaden the scope of the Digital ID system to a national, whole of economy enabler,” said John.
“The legislative framework for an economy-wide Digital ID system makes it easier and more secure to verify ourselves when accessing government and business services.
