Bookkeepers dealing with Superannuation Guarantee

Treasury has just released draft legislation which will give the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) the power to determine the definition of “BAS service”. Currently, the TPB has no such power and needs to lobby Treasury (who has final say) in order to make any changes in this area.

Treasury has just released draft legislation which will give the Tax Practitioners Board (TPB) the power to determine the definition of “BAS service”. Currently, the TPB has no such power and needs to lobby Treasury (who has final say) in order to make any changes in this area.
If this change goes through and the TPB is granted this power, it is anticipated that they may at long last expand the definition of “BAS service” to include common bookkeeping services such as those that relate to:

  • Superannuation Guarantee (SG)
  • Superannuation Guarantee Charge (SGC), and
  • Reporting of taxable payments to contractors in building and construction industry

This issue is something ABN and our members lobbied Treasury on last year and if enacted will allow bookkeepers to legally expand the menu of services they offer their clients.

With this change set to apply from 1 July 2013, it seems the matter is headed for a quick resolution.
